Today, May 25, 2008, I saw one of these birds in the Cedar Ridge Preserve in Dallas. The thing was huge and unlike nothing I’ve ever seen. It looked like a prehistoric bird without a doubt. I was 50 or 60 yards away and I could HEAR the wings. The flap was slow and strong. The feet were huge and I could see the claws on them from where I was. It had to stand at least 3 or 4 feet tall. They exist!!!

My mother related to me an incident that she heard of when she was a girl in Colorado. A man who was known as a mean unregenerate was heard screaming for help one dark night in the sparsley populated rural region somewhere around Walsenburg Colorado. The cries were coming from above and were rapidly becoming fainter and more distant. Soon they could no longer be heard. The locals believed that he had been taken by the devil because of his evil and wicked life. She, (my mother) never heard of giant birds, nor was the possibility of the man being a victim of some nocturnal monster bird of prey even thought of. Of course, as the story went, he was never seen or heard from again. No trace of the man who was ever found. This incident occurred circa 1920.

Living in central Michigan as I have for most of my life I have been off the main travel routes that these ‘megabird’ sightings would seem to imply (Central America to Newfoundland in the east and Texas to the Canadian Rockies to the north). However, from time to time I have spotted what seemed to be extremely large birds in the distance before losing sight of them. As I was one of the first to report Bald Eagles in the area in the early Eighties, I was fully aware of the perils of mis-identification of buzzards for immature Balds, and mistaking a particularly large Red-tail Hawk for one as well.
The extremely large birds that I have seen have a coloration similar to buzzards; that is, a very matte black coloration; but the overall profile (in particular the head) and style of wingbeat resembled most closely an immature Bald-except the birds in question had wingspans that I would estimate ranged from twelve to twenty feet.
The possibility of capturing an image is slight considering the likely visual range and intelligence of a bird this size. I consider myself fortunate to have caught fleeting glimpses; and hope someone finds a mega-feather one day. Other than that, I hope that the mysterious nature of these creatures is deliberate, and they continue to avoid too much human attention.

A show is on the History Channel right now about giant birds and it caught my attention because of something that happened when I was younger. I live in rural northcentral Pennsylvania and when I was around 11 I was playing outside in my front yard when I saw something coming over a nearby mountain. I at first thought it was a small propeller powered plane but I was surprised to see one so low. I kept waiting to hear the planes engine and when I did not I got curious and watched as it flew overhead. Once it got close enough I was completely shocked to see wings and a head on my “plane”. I was utterly terrified once I saw how huge the bird was above me and ran inside. I described what I saw to my family but they all played it off as a hawk or one of the few eagles we have in our area. At the time I had seen several of both birds and knew it was neither. The bird flew slowly overhead at about 150 feet so I got a great look at it. Its wingspan was easily around 14-16 feet and was roughly 7-8 feet from wing to tail. The entire time it flew over it never flapped its wings once, it just kept gliding on the air currents that flow through our valley. This wasn’t a glimpse, I watched it for about 20 seconds until it got directly overhead and scared me off. I never forgot that experience and I remember the image like it was yesterday. Whatever bird it was I have never seen another thing like it. It was like seeing something prehistoric.

When I was a small boy about seven or eight years of age I saw a gigantic bird in the sky. It was in Davenport, Iowa along the mississippi river. It was a very hot summer night with pinky clouds before sunset, the sky had a strange cast to it, like somthing you would see right before a rain storm. A
huge black bird soared overhead just above the tree tops of a large maple. It’s wingspan seemed at least 20 feet as it quickly flew off in the
distance. The year was 1960. I always wanted to beleive I imagined the phenonemom ,or even dreamed it, but I know it was real.

i was living in Brisbane Australia with some friends when their foxy dog started to go mental jumping up and barking at the ceiling then the dog ran back and forward from one side of the room to the other barking at the ceiling then she went to the back door still going mental the owner opened the door and the dog ran out side still barking but at the sky now the two women made a decision that seen i was the man i should go out and see what the f was going on so i was pushed out side unwillingly i was no hero i looked up at the sky and there was nothing but a beautiful night clear as the eye could see then this huge shadow went across the yard slowly i looked up but there was nothing, feeling a lot scared i ran back inside and the women called the dog back in
